Meet Phil Hoover
Phil Hoover has been drumming for 36 years. He was only three years old when he first discovered his love of percussion, by playing on pots and pans to records. He received his first drum set when he was 8. At the age of 12 he began performing in church, and by the age of 16, he was receiving requests to play special events. He played with gospel recording artist Barb Keller. At 19, while attending college in Stockton, CA., Hoover played with various groups, toured with the Wayne Goodine Trio, as well as with the Christian Life College Chorale; playing concerts across the country. Phil recorded two live albums with the West Coast Music Ministry Convention Choir.
In 2006, Hoover and his family moved to Louisiana. Since moving to the New Orleans area, he's been featured on various projects including a live DVD recording with Legacy Music. He also had several concert performances. He was a member of Rhythm Adventures, a percussion duo that performed and taught elementary and middle school students the history of percussion, along with various aspects and styles of drums and percussive instruments. During 2008 - 2009, he had several performances with noted Jazz pianist Frederick Sanders (former pianist for the Lincoln Jazz Orchestra) fronted by Wynton Marsalis.
Over the course of his drumming career, Phil has been featured on several albums, played with multiple groups representing many different genres of music including: jazz, rock, funk, gospel, country, bluegrass, and reggae. Hoover played with the Montage Jazz Band.
Over the last fourteen years, Phil has focused on teaching drums privately. He has worked with more than 150 students, at various levels of skill and learning. Many of these students have gone on to compete in, and place first in drumming competitions. It was during this time he developed the concepts that led to the Hoover Music System.
Hoover is a regular musician at LifeGate Church, freelances, and is currently accepting drum students.
Musical Influences: Chris McHugh, Jeff Porcaro, Dave Weckl, Philly Jo Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey, Simon Philipps, Steve Smith, and many others.
